Ha Ha Tonka
Ha Ha Tonka is a pretty easy campout. Here is a previous plan:.
- Arrive late to scout only campground. Anticipate camp set up in the dark.
- Leisurely Saturday bfast
- 2-ish mile hike from camp to castle with daypacks, food, water
- Romen or hiking meals for lunch. Prep on the concrete area between water tower and castle. We had a support vehicle meet us at the lunch spot with extra water/back up meals, adult not able to hike.
- Walk to castle. Surprisingly, minimal much info on dispay on site. Recommend someone dynamic have the castle history printed from the internet and give a quick history lesson
- Hike down steps to spring (count steps). Hike around "island"
- Hike back to camp. Start hike via trail near "island shelter" back to camp. We offered a longer (more scenic) hike back versus a shorter (via road)
- Happy to show you on a map where we hiked
- Start cast iron dinner/desserts
- Cleanup, bedtime
- Breakfast, packup long drive home.
This campout will depart on Friday night so the troop can do Saturday activities.
Scout troops are among the only campers allowed in Ha Ha Tonka State Park!
Campout Details
The state park centers around an old stone castle built around the First World War which overlooks the Ozark bluffs with fantastic views. We hope the timing brings some of the fall foliage will be turning.
Hiking
The trail system consists of a series of short trails with a decent amount of vertical climb and descents. Nothing crazy. All Scouts will be able to handle the hike. There may be a longer, optional, hike on the Turkey Pen Hollow Trail if there is enough interest.
A full up hiking backpack is totally optional, but scouts should pack a camping backpack or similar duffle bag and be able to carry everything needed for camping. The intent is to pack minimally to prep for future campouts. However, at a minimum scouts should bring a small day pack to carry lunch and a water bottle. We will be eating noon chow away from the campsite while hiking.
Campsite
The campsite is near the parking lot, so we'll still have access to all our Dutch ovens for the dessert competition! In the future, as the troop gets more hiking experience, we may be able to camp at a different site accessible only by trail.
The hike will be along the park trails. The trail goes from near our campsite, up to the castle and back. The length will depend on the boy's endurance and enjoyment of the state park. It will be a casual pace and we'll eat lunch along the way, perhaps at the top near the castle.
